Camp Maqua: Images of America Series
by Kathryn A. Baker

The Bay City, Michigan YWCA camp began the summer of 1916 at a rental cottage on Killarney Beach. Several more sites were home to camper’s temporary quarters until 1924 when land was purchased on Loon Lake In Hale, Michigan. The camp was in operation until 1978 and operated as a girls camp until 1976, when it merged with maqua book cover-xs-compressedthe all male Camp Iroquois YMCA camp, which was on nearby Sand Lake.

Kathryn A. Baker’s family purchased the main lodge of Camp Maqua in 1987, and she has been gathering research ever since. Baker interviewed hundreds of former campers and scoured archival ledgers, camp committee minutes, directors reports, newspaper clippings, and photographs from the vaults of the Great Lakes Bay Region YWCA. The result is a picturesque historical narrative chronicling the experiences of over 250 campers.

Read the fascinating history of a camp that provided memories for thousands of girls (and boys) for years. Over 300 girls were interviewed to add to the rich archival documents loaned by the YWCA Great Lakes Bay Region.
